Top Goaltenders of All-Time

I've came up with a list of the best goaltenders of all-time. I would like to hear some comments and I would like users to create their own.
I want some discussions going!

Hope you appreciate:

1)Jacques Plante - Was way more than only the creator of the mask; He revolutionized the goaltender style. Also, you can't go wrong with 434 victories, 7th Vezina trophy, 1 hart trophy and 6 Stanley Cup
2)Patrick Roy - Best goaltenders of the modern ERA. Unbelievable butterfly style with great instinct. Flashy and even cocky at time, he delivered nicely with 551 wins, 2 Conn Smythe and 4 Stanley Cup.
3)Terry Sawchuk - Probably the most consistant goalie of all-time. He deserve every praise he gets. 3 Vezina, 2 Stanley Cup and 447 wins. Also, 103 shutouts.
4)Bill Durnan - Most underrated goaltender of all-time. Definitely one of the best goaltender ever. Played only 7 years in the NHL, but in his short career, he has won 6 Vezina trophy.

legendsofhockey.net Wrote:
Durnan was an easygoing man, friendly and calm, but over time the stress of playing - and the mental and physical toll of so many minutes and games between the posts - began to wear him down. In 1950 he abruptly retired from the game at the age of 35, while still in his prime.

5)Martin Brodeur - Another great goaltender of the modern ERA. His accomplisment on the ice are phenomenal and we havn't finished yet to see his performances. 3 Stanley Cup, 2 Vezina Trophy, 446 victories and still counting.
6)Dominik Hasek - One of the most dominant player in modern ERA.
7)Glenn Hall - Revolutionized the butterfly style.
8)Vladislav Tretiak - Drafted by Montreal, but never played in the NHL.
9)Tony Esposito - Next great goaltender with the Blackhawks after Glenn Hall.
10)Georges Hainsworth - Best goaltenders of the old ERA.
11)Eddie Belfour - The Eagle, still active.
12)Bernard Parent
13)Ken Dryden - Only played 9 seasons, decided to end his career to become a law student.
14)Johnny Bower
15)Clint Benedict - First goaltender to wear the mask at the NHL level.
16)Cecil Thompson
17)Georges Vezina - Died of tuberculosis at a young age.
18)Walter Broda
19)Chuck Gardiner
20)Grant Fuhr
21)Frank Brismek - Best american goaltenders ever.
22)Ed Giacomin - EDDDIIIIIEEEEE!
23)Lorne Worsley
24)Billy Smith
25)Rogatien Vachon
26)Roy Worters
27)Mike Richter
28)Tom Barrasso
29)Lorne Chabot
30)Charlie Hodge

HM)Pelle Lindberg, Al Rollins

I think that's a great list. I definitely have to agree that some of them should be on there and are.

I agree with the order. I don't know a couple of them because of my young age, but I think that George Vézina should be in a higher place.

Probably, but I have a hard time putting him ahead of Clint Benedict and Cecil Thompson, who were extremely talented. I'm sure some would put him ahead of them and ahead of Dryden, Bower and even Belfour and Parent.

It's really difficult to compare such different ERA.

The original poster has put together a great complete list. Me only being 17 only really know of the modern day goalies such as (Roy,Brodeur, Hasek,Belfour,Barrasso, Richter, and heard of Grant Fuhr.) But there are also legends on this list that any hockey fan would know even though I never seen them play: (Plante,Esposito, Parent,Dryden). A very good complete list.

That's a pretty damn good list. Although I'm not sure I would put Tony Esposito above Ken Dryden. That's just me though.

RE: Top Goaltenders of All-Time

Naturally, I'm biased towards Brodeur, so he's the top of my list. The guy grew up idolizing Roy and tried (successfully) to emulate his style of play. Once Brodeur breaks Roy's records (barring injury), he'll be ranked higher on a lot of people's lists. He's still active, so it's hard to list him as if he's done playing.

Look how many ties Roy has though. If Brodeur plays for a few more years yet and breaks Roy's win records there'll have to be an asterisk next to it thanks to the rule changes.

I would put Roy in front of Plante. Roy won the cups in montreal pretty much by himself. He didn't benefit from the cheating Habs before the 70s who automatically got the top 2 french prospects every year. I'm not sayinf Plante wasn't great but without Plante the Canadians probably would have won those cups anyway, without Roy there is no way the Habs would have won cups in 1986 or 1993.

Get your fact straight Danimal!

- The NHL amateur draft was put in place only in 1963. Every hockey player of 17 years old without a NHL sponsored could be picked. Universial draft was established in 1969.

- Jacques Plante last season as a Montreal Canadiens was in 1962-63.

- In 1968 and 1969, the Montreal Canadiens was allowed to take the first two pick of the draft if they were born in the province of Quebec. In 1969, other NHL team denounced this rule, with reasons, because the Habs were able to take Rejean Houle and Marc Tardif, arguably the best two player available in this draft. This rule was dismantled.

Also, it's only my opinion, but I think Jacques Plante stoled one or two Stanley Cup in the late 50's. With Terry Sawchuk, he was the most dominant goaltender prior to 1960.

It's your opinion that Patrick Roy was a better goaltender than Jacques Plante, and a lot of persons think the same way, but you should look attentively before writing something that could be false. Internet abound of great hockey site, and any information can be confirmed easily.
