RE: Wayne Gretzky
What's funny is that unless I'm mistaken, Gretzky said in his autobiography that he doesn't think he'd make a very good coach. I wonder what changed his mind?
I think what changed his mind was the love of the game and I also think a little part of his decision was he is the owner.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
I think his autobiography was written in 1990 or 91. A lot changes over that time. I'm pretty sure after a couple of years in the league he said he would only play till he was 30. It is hard to give up the game you love.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
That's probably very true. That being said, he isn't doing a great job thus far in Phoenix. Although, I think part of that is the fact that they don't have any really good young players. Sure they have J.R. and Owen Nolan and Jovo Cop, but they're all past their prime, unfortunately.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
Getting Jovonovski was the most overrated signing of the summer. Nolan and J.R. are old but guys like nagy and doan are pretty good, with the way Cujo played last year i thought that they would be better, maybe not a playoff team but better than they are. I don't really blame Wayne though, he is up against some great divisional teams in the ducks, sharks and stars.

Yeah, it really isn't fair for either L.A. or Phoenix having to play in The Pacific. It's such a competetive division it's simply amazing!

RE: Wayne Gretzky
Gretzky is the best hockey player ever to lace up the boots and put on a jersey. He will use he Hockey expertise to eventually become one of the best coaches in the league as well.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
Frankly I'm still not convinced that Gretzky will make a great coach. He was the kind of talent that was more intuitive than anything else. You simply can't teach the kind of things he was able to do. However, I suppose time will tell whether or not Gretzky can add Adams to his trophy case.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
If anyone can find a way to teach it I think Gretzky will be the guy to find that way.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
I hope Gretzky can succeed as a coach. He seems to excel in everything he does but it is not a given that he will be a great coach. I do think he has an advantage over other coachs. The #1 reason I find that coachs get fired is because the players quit on them or they can't motivate the players. I don't think that Wayne is going to have many players that quit on him.

RE: Wayne Gretzky
Don't get me wrong, I do hope that he succeeds. I really do, I'm just not convinced that he will yet. That being said, I think it may take some time for him to be considered great, especially since the Phoenix management seems to have absolutely no committment to putting a good team on the ice. I mean come on, Roenick? Nolan? Jovo? They were good players but they're too old and slow to keep up with the game today.
