Wild sign Backstrom to multi-year deal
Here's an update on the Backstrom signing. Looks like the Wild got the deal done. Now I wonder what will happen to Fernandez. I guess time will tell.
The Minnesota Wild announced Thursday that the team has re-signed goaltender Niklas Backstrom to a multi-year contract.
Backstrom, 29, was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
He posted a 23-8-6 record and tied the franchise record for shutouts in a season with five in 41 games in 2006-07, his first season with Minnesota and first in the NHL.
He ranked first in the NHL with a 1.97 goals against average (GAA) and captured the 2006-07 Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award with a league-best .929 save percentage.
Backstrom teamed with Manny Fernandez to win the 2006-07 William M. Jennings Trophy as the Wild allowed a league-low 191 goals-against average.

This is good news to Minnesota fans but not to the rest of the NW Division teams...

RE: Wild sign Backstrom to multi-year deal
The article said the Minnesota GM wants to keep both goalies. Obviously, spending almost $7.5M on two goalies isn't that smart. I'm sure he's just saying it so it won't seem like he's desperate for a trade.
