Will Red Wings capatain Steve Yzerman announce his retirement today?

It's possible.

It's also possible he could announce his return.

Or it's possible the Wings could have other big news.

The team has called a news conference for 1 p.m. today for a major announcement. Speculation, of course, centers on The Captain, 41, who has been wrestling with his decision to play or retire since the Wings were eliminated by Edmonton in the first round of the playoffs.

He talked with general manager Ken Holland last week. In his last public comments, to the Free Press last Tuesday before throwing out the first pitch at a minor-league baseball game, Yzerman said:

"Sometime in the near future, I'll figure out what I'm going to do."
