RE: hotseat
I don't know if the problem is with Tippet as much as it is with Dallas' roster. Coaching can only improve a team so much, but talent can take you to the top. IMO, Dallas shares a lot of similarities with Detroit except 1: offense. Both teams have aging rosters that include a strong defense and high quality goaltending.
Unfortunately, as Dallas' offense is aging rapidly, they have no explosive forwards to replace guys who left (like Hull did after they won the Cup) or guys who are close to retirement (like Modano). Morrow is a great forward, but power forwards like him make better finishers, not playmakers/gamebreakers.
Whereas the Wings have youngsters stepping up like Zetterberg and Datsyuk have this past season when Shanahan left and Yzerman retired. Plus, we still have rookies growing into scoring roles like when Filppula showed himself in the playoffs.
Dallas took a chance trying to acquire a playmaker like Nagy, but unfortunately that experiment failed. IMO, they would be best served trying to sign a guy like Briere or Gomez who can create plays out of nothing. You're right that they need at least another sniper, but I don't think they can drop their current defensive-minded strategy unless they get a complete roster overhaul. Only a few teams are suited for a high flying offense and if you notice which teams those are (including Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Anaheim, San Jose, Tampa Bay) you'll notice they either have 3 strong scoring lines or they have Art Ross winning-caliber players to lead them. Unfortunately, Dallas has neither of those criteria.
