Kansas City is the other likely candidate, because they have a new arena and are offering a 6 year free-of-cost lease IIRC for an NHL team. Very enticing.

Though if they have learned anything from this Nashville location it should be that you need a larger metro area to support a team. Nashville is relatively small and Kansas City is only slightly larger. (Nashville = 1.5m metro, Kansas City = 2.0m metro area population)

To give you a point of reference, the Detroit metro area is roughly 4.5 million and the Pittsburgh metro area is roughly 2.5m.

I heard that the free-of-cost lease was an offer specific to only Pittsburgh. KC wanted to have Sidney Crosby badly because he would be a great way to market the team, build a fan base, and start their franchise in the right direction. I don't think they'll give that same offer to another NHL team looking to relocate.

It was the Anschutz Entertainment Group that wanted them for KC so badly, but Balsillie outbid them for the Predators. They did want the Predators in Kansas City very much so. They just want a tenant, any tenant. I can definitely see them bidding more aggressively for a franchise with a name they can sell like the Penguins, though. Traveling outside of hockey-fan territory they're "the Nashville who?".

But he is a businessman before he is a hockey fan, and if the deal is right (maybe not the same deal offered to the Penguins) then they're Kansas City bound.

I think Balsille is more of a hockey fan than business man. When you have as much money as he does you can have a hockey team and do it as a hobby like Mark Cuban in Dallas. Balsille really seems to want to put a team in his hometown which has a big enough surrounding population to support a team. Balsille has the luxury of choosing where he puts the team and can act more as a fan in this because his RIM (Blackberry) business has been so succesful.
