Lemieux: Penguins to focus on deal with casino
By JOE MANDAK, Associated Press Writer
December 18, 2006
Pittsburgh Penguin owner Mario Lemieux speaks during a news conference at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, Monday, Dec. 18, 2006. Lemieux said that a deal to sell the team to Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie is "unequivocally" dead and that the club continues to focus solely on its relationship with Isle of Capri Casinos.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Penguins owner Mario Lemieux called a deal to sell the team to a Canadian billionaire "unequivocally" dead and said Monday he is trying to reach a deal with a casino that promises to build an arena for the financially struggling club.
But if Isle of Capri doesn't get a slot-machine license from state gambling regulators Wednesday, Lemieux said the Penguins would have to "consider all of our options."
"I've never heard of a government turning down $290 million in private money to build a public facility," Lemieux said. "It's unheard-of."
Jim Balsillie last week withdrew his offer to buy the Penguins for $175 million, but has said he might still try to purchase the team. Lemieux said that won't happen and the club will try to make Balsillie forfeit his deposit.
"We can say unequivocally that the deal with Mr. Balsillie is dead," Lemieux said. "We were shocked and offended that Mr. Balsillie would back out of such an important deal at the last minute -- and less than a week before a decision on the funding of a new arena that will have far-reaching implications on our franchise, our city and our region." he said.
A call seeking comment from a representative of Balsillie's company, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd., was not immediately returned Monday.
Other suitors surfaced over the weekend.
Frank D'Angelo, a Toronto businessman who owns Steelback beer, said he and billionaire partner Barry Sherman might bid on the team. D'Angelo said he and Sherman might also pay for a new arena because they could make money off the naming rights as well as supplying beverages.
D'Angelo said he doesn't want to move the team from Pittsburgh, a guarantee that Balsillie reportedly was not willing to make to the NHL before withdrawing his bid Friday. Still, Balsillie said he also hasn't ruled out efforts to buy the team.
Isle of Capri is one of three bidders competing for the sole Pittsburgh slot-machine license that is expected to be awarded by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The two other applicants are Detroit casino magnate Don Barden and Forest City Enterprises Inc. of Cleveland.
Lemieux didn't rule out the possibility that his ownership group would keep the team, but spent most of the 10-minute news conference repeating his support for the exclusive deal the Penguins have with Isle of Capri.
"We're not talking to anybody until the license is awarded," Lemieux said.
"And remember, hit the boards hard!"

RE: update on the situation of penguins situation
Why would Lemiuex want to sell the team if they are getting a new building at no expense to the Penguins? Isn't that all they need to make money? I thought that the reason they don't make money is due to the terrible arena that is too small. Nobody seems to mention the fact that this small arena with no luxury boxes can't sell out even though they have the most promising young star since Gretzky.
As for D'Angelo, I don't see the NHL selling a team to a guy that can't get a team from the CFL. The CFL chose to shut down the franchise in Ottawa instead of dealing with this guy.
It is ridiculous for Mario to say that he is offended that someone backed out of a $175 million deal. Balsille assumed the NHL would cave on the 'not moving the team' clause and they didn't. If I was going to pay $175 million for a team I would want to make sure that I could get it out of a terrible NHL city like Pittsburgh if I wasn't getting a new state of the art arena and move it somewhere that people care about hockey and not just a winning team.

RE: update on the situation of penguins situation
It would be a shame to have the team moved. I loved the team for Lemieux and Jagr, and now Crosby. I like their jerseys too, and lately all of the expansion/relocated teams have had shit jerseys (atlanta, columbus, phoenix)

RE: update on the situation of penguins situation
I don't think the attractiveness of a jersey is a good reason to move a team. If it was, the Pens would have been gone long ago based on those baby blue jerseys they wore a long time ago. These teams that you mentioned have poor attendance but the teams have never given them a reason to get interested in hockey. Most people aren't going to care about something they have never seen if their team is never in the playoffs. The Pens have a winning tradition and still the fans can't fill a small arena.
If the 3 places you mention have hockey 40 years from now, win a couple of stanley cups have the most exciting playing duo in the league twice in 15 years and fill about 90% of their small building with 2 players being compared to Lemieux and Gretzky then I will say that they should relocate.

RE: update on the situation of penguins situation
So the Penguins are now off the market. Lemieux and his group are going to look for possible markets outside of Pennsylvania. Good for him. Apparantly he may also talk to city leaders in Pittsburgh about a possible arena plan.
I wasn't expecting this. He wanted to sell the team when it seemed like they were going to get a free arena. Now that they aren't getting a free arena he wants to keep it. This doesn't make much sense.
